Nomothetic Approach

The nomothetic approach (from Greek nomos = law) aims to identify general laws and principles that apply to all people. It focuses on dimensions of personality shared across individuals, allowing comparison and statistical analysis. Examples:

  • Eysenck's PEN model
  • Cattell's 16PF
  • The Five Factor Model
  • Standardised personality inventories

Characteristics: Quantitative, statistical, group-based, uses factor analysis, seeks universal dimensions, values prediction and control.

Idiographic Approach

The idiographic approach (from Greek idios = private) focuses on the uniqueness of the individual, seeking to understand the particular person in their full complexity. It resists reducing personality to scores on universal dimensions. Examples:

  • Allport's personal dispositions (cardinal, central, secondary)
  • Case study method
  • Narrative approaches to personality

Characteristics: Qualitative, in-depth, individual-focused, values understanding over prediction, uses life histories and biographical methods.

Resolution

Allport argued that both approaches are necessary — nomothetic methods establish the dimensional framework; idiographic methods describe individual profiles within it. Contemporary personality psychology uses person-centred analysis (cluster analysis, Q-methodology) to bridge both approaches.

💡 Exam Tips

  • The comparison table efficiently earns marks in Section B.
  • Always name theorists: Eysenck/Cattell (nomothetic) vs Allport (idiographic).
  • The resolution sentence shows higher-level understanding.
