Definition
Intellectual Disability (previously called mental retardation; now the preferred DSM-5 term) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by: (1) significant limitations in intellectual functioning (IQ below 70), (2) significant limitations in adaptive behaviour (communication, self-care, social skills), and (3) onset during the developmental period (before age 18).
Classification by severity:
- Mild (IQ 55–70): Can learn basic academic skills; largely independent as adults
- Moderate (IQ 40–55): Can learn self-care skills; need supported living
- Severe (IQ 25–40): Very limited communication; require significant support
- Profound (IQ below 25): Require total care
Causes: Chromosomal abnormalities (Down Syndrome — Trisomy 21), prenatal infections, birth complications (hypoxia), postnatal factors (severe malnutrition, head injury).
Remedial Teaching Strategies
- Task Analysis: Break complex tasks into small, sequential steps
- Positive Reinforcement: Immediate reward for correct responses; build motivation
- Repetition and Overlearning: Repeated practice until skills are automatised
- Multisensory Instruction: Use visual, auditory, and tactile materials simultaneously
- Concrete and Hands-On Learning: Minimise abstract instruction; use real objects and demonstrations
- Functional Curriculum: Focus on life skills — self-care, communication, community navigation
- Inclusive Education: Where possible, educate children alongside typically developing peers with appropriate support
- Family Involvement: Train parents to reinforce skills at home; maintain consistent routines
