šÆ Must-Know Conceptsā
- Two-way ANOVA extends one-way ANOVA to two independent variables (factors)
- Three effects examined: Main Effect of Factor A, Main Effect of Factor B, Interaction Effect (AĆB)
- Interaction effect ā when the effect of Factor A depends on the level of Factor B
- Merits: examines interaction, more economical, controls error
- Demerits: complex computation, difficult interpretation of interactions
š„ Most Repeated Question: Interactional Effect and Merits/Demeritsā
Common phrasings:
- "Explain the concept of interactional effect. Discuss merits and demerits of two-way ANOVA."
- "Elucidate interactional effect. Discuss the merits and demerits of two-way ANOVA."
- "Discuss merits and demerits of Two-Way Analysis of Variance."
Answer (Section B ā ~250 words):ā
Two-Way ANOVA is an extension of one-way ANOVA that examines the effect of two independent variables (factors) on a dependent variable simultaneously. It partitions the total variance into: (a) variance due to Factor A, (b) variance due to Factor B, and (c) variance due to the interaction between A and B.
Interactional Effect: An interaction effect occurs when the effect of one independent variable on the dependent variable differs across the levels of the second independent variable. In other words, the combined effect of A and B cannot be predicted simply from knowing the effects of A and B separately.
Example: Suppose we study the effect of teaching method (lecture vs. discussion) and class size (small vs. large) on learning. An interaction would occur if the discussion method is more effective in small classes but not in large classes ā i.e., the effect of teaching method depends on class size.
Interaction effects are typically displayed as interaction plots (line graphs). Parallel lines = no interaction; converging or crossing lines = interaction.
Merits of Two-Way ANOVA:
- Examines the interaction between two factors ā provides richer information than two separate one-way ANOVAs
- More economical ā tests two factors simultaneously in a single study
- Reduces error variance by partitioning it more finely (blocking on a second factor)
- Increases statistical power compared to running two separate experiments
Demerits of Two-Way ANOVA:
- Complex computation ā especially partitioning SS for interaction
- Interaction effects can be difficult to interpret
- Requires larger sample sizes to have adequate power for the interaction term
- Assumes normality and homogeneity of variance ā same parametric assumptions as one-way ANOVA
- Unequal cell sizes complicate computation significantly
š§ Memory Aidā
Two-way ANOVA effects: Main A + Main B + Interaction AĆB = three separate F-tests.
Interaction clue: Crossing or non-parallel lines on an interaction plot = interaction present.

š” Exam Tipsā
- Interaction effect explanation with an example earns the most marks in this topic.

- Know the difference: one-way ANOVA = one factor; two-way ANOVA = two factors + interaction.
